These five brothers have been singing together for four decades. One of their songs, ‘The Eighteenth Day of June’ is about the Battle of Waterloo, the 200th anniversary of which is being marked this year. The song originated as a broadside, perhaps written by one of the soldiers who fought in the battle.
Singer and researcher Pete Wood has written a feature article on songs and broadsides about the Battle of Waterloo and other folk songs from the Napoleonic period, including the well-known ‘The Bonny Bunch of Roses’. The Wilsons are having a busy year – in March they performed in a 40th anniversary sell-out concert at Sage Gateshead, and a few weeks later joined pop singer Sting on stage at the same venue for a performance of his show, The Last Ship.
