Players of any instrument are welcome. Previous experience of folk music is useful but by no means essential.

To join the London Youth Folk Ensemble you need to: 

  • Be 12 - 19 years old
  • Have a good grasp of technique on your instrument and be able to play tunes confidently
  • Have some experience of learning and playing tunes by ear
  • Have some experience of playing your instrument in a group (eg band, ensemble, orchestra)
  • Demonstrate passion for folk music and commitment to the Ensemble

How do I join?

If you are interested in joining LYFE 2019-20, you will need to sign up to a free sampler session (date to be confirmed in July) in September at Cecil Sharp House.

This event is an informal open audition and everyone wishing to apply for LYFE 2019-20 must sign up to the Sampler session. 

Please note that the London Youth Folk Ensemble is an annual commitment.



LYFE give several public performances during the year, including:

  • Camden Youth Jazz, LSO St Luke’s
  • The Takeover, Cecil Sharp House
  • Folk by the Oak festival, Hatfield House

Annual fee

£240 | £180 concessions (for young people in receipt of free school meals or similar circumstances)
